LG is supposed to unveil its new game conversion engine at IFA 2011 in Berlin next week. The conversion engine is an OpenGL based 2D to 3D conversion. LG is attempting to help expand the amount of 3D games for devices like their Optimus 3D. This engine will be the first of its kind in the world for smartphone’s and should prove to be a great asset to developers looking to dive into the 3D app development venue.
LG’s new 3d game engine will be released as a Maintenance Release first for the Optimus 3D starting in October. We don’t have a date for everyone because it will depend on your carrier as to when you get this. LG also states that the converter will allow developers to optimize their 2D games to 3D without the need of development. This should help increase the number of 3D games without the need of intense development creating many more apps specifically for the few 3D devices currently available.
The converter will allow people to play 2D games in 3D without paying any extra. You can also easily switch back to 2D by turning off the converter. After IFA 2011 i’m sure we will have more information for you all but for now thats about all we have.
UPDATE: Its been 2 months since we wrote this article and it seems that the update to the LG Optimus 3D is rolling out with the 3D game conversion engine. The update will bring your device to build version V10K and should allow your Optimus 3D to play 2D games in 3D. There are a few listed titles that have been tested and working with the engine although many games that you may already have will convert as well. There has also been reports of the games reducing the devices performance a little. This being said the reduced performance shouldn’t interrupt or really effect game play much if any. Again let us know if you use the conversion engine and how you like it.
