Review: Samsung Galaxy S4 MHL 2.0 HDTV Adapter

The Samsung Galaxy S4 MHL 2.0 HDTV HDMI Adapter allows you to mirror your phones screen on any HDTV with an available HDMI port. This is a very easy to use accessory that supports not only the Galaxy S4 but also the Note 2 and S3. Also the HDTV adapter is an official Samsung accessory which give the satisfaction of a high quality and stable adapter.

How does the MHL 2.0 HDTV HDMI Adapter Work?
Quite simply the adaptor is a small cable that allows one side to plug into your Galaxy S4 or other compatible device and the other side allows an HDMI cable to plug in. You can also plug your charger into the adapter to charge your device while its being used but is not required for the accessory to work. Plug in your phone, then plug in a normal HDMI cable and turn your phone on and watch your screen mirror onto the TV.

Galaxy S4 MHL 2.0 HDMI Adapter Design
The HDMI adapter is a short cable that can easily be stored in your pocket or any carrying case with other accessories and comes in white. One side is a normal mini USB and the other side is a little larger to allow an HDMI cable to be plugged in as well as a mini USB on the side for optional charging. The optional charging is a great feature as if you don’t want to plugin you don’t have to and it will pull power directly from the HDMI through the TV.

Galaxy S4 MHL 2.0 HDMI Adapter Performance
We really have nothing negative to say about the adapter as it functions flawlessly with very little room for error as seen in the video below. The quality that is mirrored from the device is full HD and seems to be as crisp and clear as the phone itself. We tested it with Netflix and found the video quality to be better than what we get from any of our Google TV boxes. The sound is controlled from the device itself with absolutely no lag in video or sound quality.

We have been using this accessory for a week now and actually took it on vacation with us over the last several days watching Netflix and using chrome through it without any issues. We would recommend this accessory to anyone looking to mirror their Galaxy S4 on their TV. If you are looking to get the adapter or already have one please let us know what your thoughts our on it via comments below.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Solution (Qi Wireless Charging)

Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging

Many of us already own the Samsung Galaxy S4 and one of the features that was rumored but never came to reality was wireless charging out of the box. This being said there is a UK based company that has them up available for pre-order. We assume that eventually Samsung will release their own official wireless charging solution but Mobile Fun has beat them to the punch making it available to the public via pre-order. While this wireless charging solution is advertised for the Galaxy S4 it will also work with other Qi compatible devices like the Google Nexus 4, Lumia 820 and 920, Galaxy Note and Note 2, and Galaxy S2 and S3.

You should also take note that when ordering the Qi Wireless charging pad that with the Google Nexus 4 it will just work as intended and is already available. When using the charging pad with the Samsung Galaxy S4 you will also need the wireless charging cover that replaces your battery back cover. The back cover will come in both black and white versions. If you already have a Qi charging pad of some kind then the cover will work with that as well only requiring you to buy the battery door cover.

Pre-Order the Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Door here

The Qi Wireless Charging pad is already available and can be purchased from Mobile Fun for $53.99 but if you are using a Galaxy S4 the battery door can be purchased for $37.99. You can pre-order the cover and will get it in around 5 weeks.

Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Cover Review (Video)

I decided with the newest innovation from Samsung comes a lot of questions about cases so we will talk about the Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Case. The Flip case is as thin a case as you can get for you Galaxy S4 as it doesn’t cover the back but actually replaces it. If you don’t normally put cases on your devices but want a way to cover the screen without a screen protector then this is the way to go. You can get the flip cover in many colors like black, white, light blue, yellow, pink, orange, and lime green.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Cover Review

Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Case Design:
The case is among the easiest to put on your device due to its design being a replacement for the standard back battery door and nothing more but a thin flap that covers the face of your device. The back plate seamlessly replaces the battery door allowing you to put the stock back plate back in the box keeping it in new condition forever. The best part of this is the fact that you can do battery pulls and addition of Micro SD cards no different then if you had no case at all. The face cover is a thin strong flap that folds over the phone when not in use and folds behind the device when in use. The part of the cover that is important is the fact that its not only solid but also has a soft material that sits against the phones screen when closed to prevent scratches.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Cover Protection:
If you are looking to protect your S4 from impact then your looking at the wrong case although the flip cover does create a very protective front to the device to prevent scratches. This case focuses protection on the screen itself and absolutely none to the phones back or corners. This being said there are a large number of users out there that prefer no case at all and this is a great way to keep the thin phone thin while adding incredible protection to the screen.

Overall the Galaxy S4 flip cover is a very nice and perfectly designed accessory for your phone, especially if you don’t like bulky cases and want to keep the thin light form meant for the S4. This case is for people who take care of their phones and just need that little added protection. The only con to this case is that its not a smart cover in that when opening and closing the flip cover it does not wake or put your phone to sleep. It does help that this is an official Samsung accessory as well so you know the quality is there.

Nexus 7 Keycase Keyboard Case Review (Video)

This is a review of the Google Nexus 7 Keycase, which is a leather keyboard case for the Nexus 7. Generally I’m not one for the keyboard cases on tablets simply because of the size of them in most cases but this case is one of those exceptions. When you first open the box that holds the Nexus 7 Keycase you will find instructions on pairing the keyboard, a USB cable for charging the keyboard, and a case that has a foam insert where your tablet will go. You will also notice that the keyboard can easily be removed to use independently from the case itself.

Nexus 7 Keycase Design:
The Keyboard case is made of a strong leather that is not only solid and not flimsy as you expect from leather cases but the seams are tight and strong. The enclosure for the tablet itself is very snug with a flap on the bottom that velcro’s under the tablet to hold it tightly in place. You will also notice that the keyboard itself is tightly sown into a leather enclosure as well. This case is as solid a design as you will ever see in a leather case and still has many features to be desired. One of the other design aspects worth mentioning is the fact that it has a stand in the back so it can be propped up to be used like a laptop. This stand closes when your not using the tablet flush with the outside of the case. The case when closed is held closed by a flap that slides into the top holding it tightly. The only negative that we found with the case design is that flap although it is one of those things that looks to be the best way to do it.

Nexus 7 Keycase Keyboard:
The best feature by far on this case (and the reason most are buying it) is the keyboard. The small keyboard is roughly the same dimensions as the Nexus 7 as far as width and high (easily thinner) but still large enough to be useful and feel like a real keyboard. You can turn the keyboard off with a switch on the bottom right which is also how you pair it via Bluetooth. While its a nice looking and functional keyboard you can also remove it from the case easily by lifting it up. The keyboard stays in place by an almost unnoticeable magnet although is held on nicely. You can lift the keyboard out of the case and in the future if you decide to change cases it can still be used independently from the Keycase.

Nexus 7 Keycase Protection:
This was the area we were initially worried about although this case gives as much if not more protection than your rugged cases due to the tight design and slightly wider edges than the device itself. When closed your Nexus 7 is in a leather enclosure that almost nothing is exposed. When open the tablet is completely covered besides the screen although the leather around the front will still protect your device from a front drop.

We love the Nexus 7 Keycase Keyboard case design, functions and features as well as the professional quality. Of course we will give you the negatives as well although don’t expect anything too bad as its a great case. It is much larger than most Nexus 7 cases (although rather thin for having a keyboard in it). Many people look for keyboard cases that are solid although you will have a hard time finding one that protects as well as this one. Last but not least, when using the Keycase the tablet sits at a 45 degree angle and cannot be adjusted.

Overall this is the best keyboard case we have used for the Nexus 7 and we recommend it to anyone looking to use their Nexus 7 as a laptop. If you have this case please drop us a line and let us know how you like it and if your thinking about getting it and have questions ask those as well.

Review: Trident Kraken AMS Galaxy S3 Case

The Samsung Galaxy S3 needs no introduction although there are so many accessories available for it that its hard to keep up. Here we will review the Trident Kraken AMS case (AMS-I9300-BK) for the Samsung Galaxy S3 which at first glance looks to be a very protective case. When most users contact us about which case to get for their phones the question is generally “What is a pretty case that will protect my phone?”. In the case of the Trident Kraken Case it is a very stylish case but still holds on to superior protection.

Trident Kraken Galaxy S3 Case

Design of the Trident Kraken AMS Galaxy S3 Case:
The Kraken AMS case for the Galaxy S3 comes as a 3 piece case, silicon interior case for impact, backing with a kickstand and a front that completes the case with screen protector.  Overall the case looks to have a rugged style to it and regardless of its actual protection feels very convincing in your hand.  You can see in the video that all of the cutouts for the case are precise and everywhere required.  There is a raised bevel around the front of phone’s screen that also covers around the camera.  Covers are anywhere that require access such as micro USB and headphone jack.

Protection of the Trident Kraken AMS Galaxy S3 Case:
As we have stated before there is a raised bevel around the screen that allows you to set the phone face down without worry of scratching it.  Second there is a screen protector that comes with the case to add a little protection on top of that.  The inner silicon case protects against impact of bumps and drops while the outer shell takes any damage that may incur without affecting the phone.

Review for Galaxy S3 Kraken AMR Case

Customizability of the Kraken AMS Galaxy S3 Case:
One of the best features of this case is that its a swiss army of a case due to the fact that there are actually accessories for the accessory.  The AMS in its name stands for “Adaptive Modular System” which describes the case perfectly. When you get the case it will come with a detachable kickstand (which in itself is a great feature) and you can attach other items to it. There are pieces like a bike clip, tripod mount, universal clamp, universal belt clip, windshield mount and wire organizer. You can see these attachments below and get them from mobilefun.com.

galaxy s3 kraken case accessories

Overall the Kraken AMS case for the Galaxy S3 by Trident is a great case.  I will say if you want protection and style its perfect.  Those of you looking for a thin case may want to look into FlexiShield cases or something else as this one is thin for the protection it gives but you can tell its in your hand when using it.  Anyone that works in an environment that their phone takes beatings and/or dust is always near it, this is the case for you without a doubt.  Personally I like the look and feel of this case but am not one who needs something that is skin tight.  Let us know if you own one and what you think of it as well as those of you who are looking into getting one for yourselves.

Samsung Galaxy S4 S-Voice APK Download Available

Those of us that like being able to talk to our Android device to perform actions now have the Galaxy S4 S-Voice app available to download. Google Now is great for searching the internet and performing some of our basic needs by voice but Samsung has made some leaps with S-Voice worth checking out.

S-Voice answers questions, makes recommendations and performs actions using a natural user language interface. S-Voice is based on the Vlingo personal assistant and is released with new Samsung Galaxy devices.

Galaxy S4 S-Voice APK Download

When testing S-Voice from the Galaxy S3 last year we ran into a few issues but depending on your device this version should work rather well. We have tested it on a few devices one of which being the S3 and it seems to be working very well. Our HTC One X crashed once but after a force close and phone restart it seems to be fine.

This APK comes courtesy of SamMobile who ripped it from a Galaxy S4 system dump and released it for all of us to play with. SamMobile tested the APk on a Galaxy Note II, SIII and Nexus 4 and claim that it is working flawlessly on those devices right now. Take note that they have stated some AOSP ROM’s are having issues with the APK.

Give S-Voice a shot on your device and let us know your device and how its working. We will continue testing on other devices like the Nexus 7 and 10 as well as the Note II.

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S5 Will Run Tizen 2.1 Magnolia?

This morning we received a screenshot of a Galaxy S5 spec sheet from Samsung’s US website. The image (shown below) states that the Galaxy S5 will be running Tizen 2.1 Magnolia. The person who sent this to us said that the page was quickly removed but we tried anyways and sure enough nothing was there. We would like to first state that none of this has been verified and its just an anonymous tip that may mean nothing. Here is the email we received:

Samsung Galaxy S5 Tizen Phone

Hello Android Advice,
I was on the Samsung website looking through phones when a listing for a Galaxy S5 showed up in the list. I clicked on it and saw this which I decided to take a screenshot and send on to you. I noticed that it says the S5 will be running Tizen and not Android and figured it would be a good article for you. I tried to go back to it after leaving the page and it was gone so couldn’t have been up for more than a few seconds.

The specifications shown for the quick listing of the Samsung Galaxy S5 (SCH-R700M) from the partial screenshot we have is the following:

  • Form and Color: Bar, Touchscreen Marble White
  • Operating System: Tizen 2.1 Magnolia
  • Processor: 1.25 GHz Hex Core
  • Dimensions: 5.79 in x 2.98 in x .3 in
  • Weight: 4.2 ounces
  • Battery: 3250mAh (9.5 hours of talk time)

Samsung rumors of a new phone running Tizen has been mentioned more than once and rumor has it the release will be this year. Most sources currently say some time in August or September ub we all know thats just talk. We will be following Samsung and their intentions with Tizen over the next several months and see where all of the rumors get us.

We don’t put much stock in leaks of this nature although its worth showing to see what others think about the anonymous information. We assume that the posting on the website as an actual product would not be the first thing to leak although the sender has nothing to gain so its worth a mention. Let us know what you think of the new Galaxy S5 specs above via comments below.

Does Samsung’s Tizen Threaten Android’s Future?

Tizen is a Linux based operating system a lot like Android but is Samsung’s attempt to compete with Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. This could be more of a hit to Android than iOs due to the fact that Samsung is the most popular in Android devices holding a firm 40% of the market. In theory Android could lose most of that 40% in a very short period of time once Tizen is released.

Samsung Tizen OS

Samsung having a huge marketing budget and of course the creativity in commercials that we all have seen and love Tizen could be a success for them. Not only do we need to worry about this possible change in OS by Samsung from a market share but also the fact that developers will be split from Android reducing the number of rooted devices and custom ROM’s that we have seen to date.

Samsung has been rumored to be releasing a high end phone with the Tizen OS by the end of this year. I guess we won’t have to wait too long to see the direction this new development by Samsung will take. I personally will grab a Tizen phone if and when released to see what its all about although don’t see myself jumping the Android ship any time soon.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 FlexiShield Skin Review

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 is one of the more popular Android phones due to its large screen and Samsung’s easy to use interface. This being said there are so many different accessories to choose from how do you pick the right one? One of the first things we purchase for our new phones is a case to protect our investment. Here we will review one of our favorite cases for the Galaxy Note 2, the FlexiShield Skin from MobileFun.com.

FlexiShield Skin Galaxy Note 2 Case

Design of the FlexiShield Skin Case for the Note 2:
Its called a skin and rightfully so as you can barely tell its on the device since it fits snug with a thin design. Not only is it ultra-thin but its also a strong gel material that protects and gives a bit to take some of the impact if dropped. With its precision design it fits tightly on the Note 2 and easily taken off with a little effort (it won’t fall out I promise). The cutouts for the speaker, microUSB, mic, headphone jack, stylus, etc. are all perfectly placed with a soft bevel to avoid rough edges. Also even though we reviewed the black case you can get it in white or transparent in the event you want the device to look like there is no case at all. You will notice that the power button and volume rocker aren’t cutouts but raised mimicked buttons. This feature allows those areas to be covered but still are easily pressed.

Protection of the FlexiShield Skin Note 2 Case:
Of course you wouldn’t buy a case unless it gives your phone the protection that its meant to give. The FlexiShield Skin is made of a flexible but solid gel that can handle a good bit of impact and absorb it. This gel also has the rubber feel that creates much less risk of dropping your phone in the first place as opposed to the slick shell of the Galaxy Note 2 itself. Like other gel cases this also has the raised beveled edge around the screen so you can place the phone face down without risking scratched screen and nicks. This bevel comes up and around the screen securely so that it seals the edges to reduce risks of dust getting in and around the screen as well.

Overall the design of the case is modern and smooth and doesn’t booger up the nice design of the phone and the protection is still there as expected from a case. After our video we actually did drop the Note 2 and it bounced twice without any issues. The drop was not on video because it was not intentional but just wanted to emphasize the integrity of the cases protection. In a world where thinner is better the FlexiShield cases are something everyone should at least consider.

Get Google Now on your iPhone and iPad (Video)?

Google is continually finding ways to extend their reach to ever person in the world through device integration. Google plans on making Google Now a built in feature of Google Chrome. It looks like “Now” will no longer be an Android only feature. Not only are they integrating it with Chrome but it seems they are also looking at releasing it on iOS.

Google Now for iOS iPhone iPad

iOS users should be excited about this news while us Android loyalists are wondering why put the great Android features on iOS? Well the Google Now that will be integrated into iOS will be the “Now” features only and not the voice search function. Features iOS users will notice is the application running in the background and keeping track of everything the user is doing to notify them about appointments, traffic, movie times, sports scores all without having to look on your own.

This all comes from a Video that was released featuring the same voice from the original Google Now videos mentioning the fact that it will soon be available to iPhone and iPad. The video was removed quickly although not before we could grab a copy.

This really does make sense for Google to move into iOS whenever they see a gap. With the large user base Apple has created they can reach a lot more people and put a serious hurt on Siri. As Android users we should be happy that Google continues to dominate as it makes room for even more improvement on the Android OS. Let us know via comments below how you feel about iOS getting our Android features without having to steal them.
