Top 5 Android Phones January 2013

What are the top 5 Android phones currently available on the market? Now that we are in 2013 it makes sense that they are all devices that were released last year at some time. When you are looking for a new phone odds are you are going Android based on the overwhelming statistics showing Android is the OS of choice. This being said when you go to look through all of the Android devices available, how do you decide which one is the best. We will tell you, thats how 🙂 … If we are wrong you can slam us in the comments section at the bottom of this article.

1. samsung galaxy s3Samsung Galaxy S3 (by a landslide)
Every Android enthusiast has followed Samsung and have noticed big things coming from the popular company. The Galaxy S3 just being made by Samsung gives it an advantage. This device is Samsung’s latest flagship Android phone and has a crystal clear 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD display and a quad-core processor. What this means for you is no laggy graphics and speed to support any app you want to run on it. You will also get a removable battery and micro SD card support which most newer devices are starting to phase out.

Not only are the hardware specifications impressive but the software is loaded with extra features that are actually useful. Samsung has its own interface called TouchWiz making the device much more user friendly than the average Android device. Its also important to note that this is the most widely owned and supported Android device on the market to date.

htc one x plus2. HTC One X+
HTC has created a thin powerful family of devices with their One series. This phone runs on a quad-core processor putting it in line with the best specs available on a mobile device. You can get the One X+ with 64GB of storage. One thing to keep in mind is that while this device has an awesome screen that is the largest in its class and very clear that the battery life suffers and if you don’t like charging the phone at all during the day it may not be for you. You will get this device with Android 4.1 out of the box and HTC’s Sense UI which is second only to Samsung’s TouchWiz.

google nexus 43. Google Nexus 4
Many Android developers and enthusiasts would argue that this device should be number one on the list although for the average user based on the purpose of this article it comes in third. Its a very affordable device that can be purchased out right for half of most other high end Android devices. This is also a Google device meaning that its always up to date and is the cleanest Android experience available.

The design of the Nexus 4 is small form and comes with a display that is on par with the top 2 devices in this article. If you don’t want the custom overlays that you get with HTC and Samsung this is the perfect device. It is fast enough to handle any app on the market today as well as coming with the most up to date Android OS 4.2 Jelly Bean. We do have to note that its storage is lower than the others and it lacks the 4G connectivity that we have all come to need in our high paced lives.

samsung galaxy note 24. Samsung Galaxy Note 2
Of course another Samsung phone would be on this list as they are as stated before king of the mobile industry right now. The Galaxy Note 2 is more of a phone Tablet hybrid as it has a large 5.5 inch display and a stylus. If you want a phone and a tablet but only want to have one device this one is easily the choice for you.

The Galaxy Note 2 is a powerful device with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface making it a very user friendly device for anyone. You will also get the most recent version of Android when you first turn the device on. The battery life is average for a device of its size and can easily last all day short of serious gaming.

lg optimus 4x hd5. LG Optimus 4X HD
When we think powerful smartphones LG usually does not hit our radar although they have proven to be a high end manufacturer with the Optimus 4X HD. This device comes with a quad-core processor, 4.7 inch display, and a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 making it very appealing to the eye.

The 4X HD is a great device for those that want a completely custom Android experience out of the box due to LG adding their own overlay that covers the stock Android look and feel. This device is however not for those that want the power and design of the previous devices mentioned.

Android Claims 70% of Smartphone Market Share in Q4 2012

Android Beats Apple Smartphone Market Share 2012

While we have seen everywhere that Android devices were king in 2012, we never thought it was as dominant as 70.1% of the market. We could have easily guessed that Android was beating out Apple’s iOS by the landslide in share price that Apple has seen this month.

According to the latest research from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) service, global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually to reach 217 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Android and Apple iOS together accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide.

Among Google’s Android OS’s grip on the market we see around 152 million phones being activated last quarter alone. This makes Android the favored OS by far seeing as Apple held on to only around 22% of total market share. This means that Android is up by almost 42.7% year over year. At this rate Apple had better come up with something or risk their empire collapsing under the pressure or our little green friend.

Just to give you an idea of how well Android is actually doing, 68.4% of all devices last year being used were Android. This equates to around 3 times what Apple did in the same time frame. Google and its Android OS have most assuredly created a global name thats sure to do nothing but grow from here on out.

  3. Backup your current ROM by navigating via volume buttons and selecting “backup” with your power button.
  4. Clear Data by navigating to “Wipe Data/Factory Reset”.
  5. Next Wipe Cache by navigating to “Wipe Cache partition”
  6. You are now ready to install the new ROM you Downloaded by navigating to “Install Zip from Internal” and selecting the CyanogenMod 10.1 file.
  7. Last you need to install GAPPS the exact same way as you did the ROM in the last step.

How to Duplicate an Eclipse Project for a New Android App

copy eclipse android project and create new icons

Most new developers for Android will create an app and then want to create a completely new one without starting from scratch. Basically if you have already created a project and want to use it as a starting point for something new, why start over? Keep in mind that there may be a little cleanup beyond what will be discussed here if the app is completely different but close projects being duplicated can save a lot of time and effort.

Copy an existing Project with a new name (package and resource refractor):
Before you copy a project you will need to make sure that the project your copying is open in eclipse otherwise it will not copy. Changing the icons for the app will be discussed after the renaming process.

  1. Select the project that you want to copy, right click it and select copy
  2. Right click in the white space below that project in your package explorer and select paste.
  3. You will now be forced to rename the package so that there is not a duplicate.
  4. Open your AndroidManifest and rename the package-name and save
  5. Next you should have the ability to “Update Launch Configuration”, do it.
  6. Next rename the main package by selecting it, right clicking, select refractor and then rename
  7. You will now change the name of the package, preview and continue
  8. After saving it will ask you to “Update References”, do this as well.

Replace old icons with new ones in Eclipse and change App Name Label:

  1. First we will open “AndroidManifest.xml”
  2. Click on the tab below the editable file that says Application
  3. Find the Text Box labeled “Icon” and click Browse
  4. At the bottom you will see a button that says “Create New Icon”, click it
  5. Create your new icon and click finish
  6. If you get windows saying “Yes to All”, click them

If this process created another set of icons instead of overwriting the old ones you will need to go into your “res” folder and delete the old ones and rename the new ones to match.

After completing the two processes above you should now have a new project that is completely independent of the one copied. Now you can create an entirely new app as a new project. If there are any steps that you notice have been left out or have anything else to add please feel free to leave it via comments below.

Texting and Driving Facts and Prevention through New Technology

texting and driving

No matter what anyone says, we all text and drive at least occasionally. When I grab my phone and send or receive a text I really don’t think too much about the effects that it has on my driving and still like to think it doesn’t. This being said there are many statistics to show that it is dangerous and even more with teens who already drive much more aggressively than most adults.

Facts about Texting and Driving:
Almost 1 out of 4 auto accidents occurred because of cell phone use. This equates to around 1.3 million car crashes in just one year because of a cell phone. Texting while driving delays a drivers reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol level at the legal limit. When you take the time to text while your driving down the road it takes roughly 5 seconds to send a text. While this doesn’t sound like a lot of time, at 55mph you travel close to 100yds (the length of a football field) without looking up at the road. To give a better idea of the dangers of texting and driving check these stats out (increase risk of accident):

  • 2.8x more risk – Calling a friend by Dialing their number
  • 1.3x more risk – Talking while driving
  • 1.4x more risk – Reaching for your phone
  • 23x more risk – Texting and driving

With at least 82% of Americans age 16-17 owning cell phones 34% have admitted to texting and driving. We all know that even at the 34% that have admitted this there are many more that aren’t willing to spill. Those teens that text and drive spend almost 10% of the time outside of their driving lane. Also take note that 18% of fatalities from distraction related accidents are caused by cell phones one way or another.

There are many ways that we try to justify texting and driving or at least find ways we think make it safer. One thing we all assume is that reading a text message and not sending one is much safer. Others are holding the phone near the windshield, or increasing following distance, and only texting when at a red light or stop sign. Are these really ways to increase your safety and decrease your risk of an accident? I don’t judge because I text and drive but wont say its safe by any means.

Preventative measures in place to fight Texting and Driving:
Within the U.S. there are 10 states that prohibit all drivers from using mobile devices while driving and a total of 32 that prohibit new drivers from using their mobile devices while driving. Overall there are 39 states that have banned specifically texting and driving completely with general cell phone use still allowed.

How can you prevent Texting and Driving:
Its quite simple, just don’t do it. If you do have the temptation to text when driving, put your phone somewhere you cannot get to it when you get in the car. At a very minimum ask a passenger to read the text to you assuming someone is in the car with you. Download an App to your device to help with texting when in the car (apps below in technologies).

Technologies available to parents to help with Texting and Driving:

  • DriveCam – a device that allows a parent to monitor a drivers activity and provides real time feedback via video.
  • AT&T Drive Mode – This is a free anti-texting and driving mobile app for Android and Blackberry devices from AT&T.
  • Text-Free Driving Pledge – This is a much less likely solution since teens aren’t the most reliable of sorts but is available just the same. Teens and parents can take the text-free-driving pledge at textinganddrivingsafety.com

There are also many social avenues that to help with anti-texting and driving awareness such as Twitter accounts: @RayLaHood, @DistractionGov, @NHTSgov, and @DriveSafely. Some great blogs for this are FromReids.org, RookieDriver.wordpress.com, ctdrive.blogspot.com, EndDD.org.

Mobile apps available to help the Texting and Driving Problem:
There are many apps available on mobile devices to make texting easier for you or to block it completely until you get to your destination. Some of these apps are:

  • iZup – sends calls directly to voicemail and waits to deliver text messages until your car stops.
  • DriveSafe.ly – Reads texts out loud and allows you to respond without ever touching the phone.
  • Textcution – Disables texting while your car is moving and also has a notification in place to alert parents when the app is removed.
  • DriveOff – when a device is traveling at over 10mph this app will shut off and distracting apps on your device and halt incoming calls and texts.
  • TextBuster – This is a more advanced app that requires a device installed in the car that will disable texting while driving but still allow phone calls and GPS.
  • DriveScribe – This one will block texts when the car is in motion but also let the user know when they are driving too fast. This one does require the driver to start the app before driving.

While texting and driving is becoming more of a problem each year car companies are realizing the need for something. Many 2013 models of cars are coming out with hands free texting capabilities and many other features to create a safer driving experience. Personally I have seen people trip over curbs and walk right into people just walking and texting. While funny it goes to show if a person can’t walk and text then how likely is it they will be in a car accident when doing the same thing.

Personally I do text and drive and will continue to text and drive so i’m not criticizing those that do just making everyone aware that it is a real concern that should be addressed by parents and especially new drivers. I am NOT a huge fan of laws being created to control what we do although I do leave it up to parents to educate their children and lead by example.

New “BitTorrent Certified” Android TV

BBK Android BitTorrent TV Box

Most people that have at least a beginner knowledge of file-sharing have used a torrent site to get TV shows or movies for free. And most of the major torrent websites like EZTV and The Pirate Bay have shown that its going to take a lot to shut them down in this day and age. With this being said there has been a “BBK BitTorrent Certified Box” show up that is around the size of a Mac Mini.

Torrent Freak announced the new TV box on Wednesday and stated that it will be the first of its kind allowing you to stream uTorrent and BitTorrent content through your local network. There will also be a free VPN trial with the device to allow anonymous downloading from the torrent sites. BitTorrent themselves have stated that BBK is a certified partner:

“The product is from BBK and BOL is their distribution partner. BBK has participated in the BitTorrent Certification program for some time and this is their latest offering,” adding that “The program has been in place since 2008 and millions of devices have shipped with BitTorrent Certification. BBK is one of the largest consumer electronics manufacturers with a focus on China and Russia. BOL is a Europe-based [consumer electronics] distributor.”

While this looks like a great device that would do well in the current market there are a few things to keep in mind before getting too excited about the new product. One is that the company has only an email address as a form of contact and their website is registered to a company called Business Origin Ltd. Second the company is associated with hair growth products which seems a little odd for a tech related company. We will keep up with this new BitTorrent box and let you know as we find out more about its validity.

Whats the Difference between Google Maps on Android vs iOS6?

google maps android vs ios6

The big question right now is what is the difference between Google Maps on Android verse Google Maps on iOS?  Either way after the huge fail over Apple Maps has been taken care of by Google releasing Google Maps on iOS in the App Store.  This being said you will not have the same experience and features that you get on your Android phone on the iPhone.  Google didn’t just port over their Google Maps application to iOS but rather created a new version specifically for iOS6 that lacks some of Androids native features.

Google Maps for iOS is a much cleaner and nicer looking experience although as far as features go it is lacking many.  One of the features that you will not see on the iOS version is offline maps, which tends to be a popular feature for many users.  As far as turn by turn navigation, you will see this in the iOS version although voice is not available for walking directions as it is in Android.  The iOS version of Google Maps is also missing the bike directions (the little green lines for bike paths).  Local business listings seem to be about the same on both versions.  The last feature that we notice missing from the iOS version of Google Maps is Wikipedia integration.  What this does is allow an overlay that will integrate Wikipedia listings for businesses and tourist attractions.

We have to wonder if Google left any of these features out on purpose to keep it just barely sub-par to Android.  At any event its good to see those poor souls that have been getting lost in the wilderness using Apple Maps finally get Google Maps back.  Let me know via comments below anything I missed or any input you have.

Apple Market Share is Declining as Android Takes Over (Quarterly Breakdown)

Apple stock has been dropping as well as its smartphone market share as Android seems to be increasing its share quickly based on quarterly market share. Unless you purchase a used iPhone 3G or 3GS you will likely have to spend $449 for the entry level iPhone (the iPhone 4). This means those people that are just now finally upgrading from a flip phone to a smartphone only have Android as an affordable start. This has clearly been the reason for most first time smartphone users going with Android from the beginning. With so many people adopting smartphones these days and many choosing iPhones the cheaper Android version are winning the newbies.

Smartphone Market Share Comparison

If you look at the image above released by IDC (International Data Corporation) you can clearly see Google’s growth and Apples decline. In the fourth quarter of 2011 you notice that Apple did gain serious ground with the release of the iPhone 4S although it was short lived and all gain was lost over the following 12 months. The number one reason for this decline (based on statistics) is the fact that Samsung released a worthy competitor to the iPhone 4S in May this year, the Galaxy S3.

We not only see Apples decline with their market share but also their share price which has steadily dropped over the past month or so. AAPL has dropped over $100 a share recently and there is no end in the near future from what we see. This being said they are a resilient company that will likely see their numbers increase based on Q4 holiday sales. We personally all at Android Advice have Apple stock and are still looking at it as a buy although short term may not see positive results.

Apple has mentioned recently releasing a more affordable iPhone for entry level smartphone adapters, which can be seen with its initial release in China. If they successfully release a lower end iPhone things will likely change. If not then Apple may be compared to Blackberry in the near future. Lets just assume with Apple’s great marketing team that they will succeed but likely never catch Android in overall market share.
