Google Nexus 7 vs. iPad Mini Compared

ipad mini vs nexus 7

We compare the Google Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini based on device specifications and features. With Apple trying to say their iPad Mini is a better option by comparing nothing more than a webpage and its size seems a bit close minded so we have decided to go through everything and see how they rally compare. Not actually having an iPad Mini in hand does pose some difficulty when comparing some features so we will leave those out for now.

Apple iPad Mini Google Nexus 7
Operating System: iOS 6 Android 4.1
Display: 7.9 inch IPS
1024×768 (163ppi)
7 inch IPS
1280×800 (216ppi)
Size: 7.9 x 5.3 x 0.28 inches 7.8 x 4.7 x 0.41 inches
Weight: 0.68 lbs/308 grams 0.75 lbs/340 grams
Processor: Dual-core A5 Quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3
Storage: 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB 8GB or 16GB
Camera: 5MP rear, 1.2MP front 1.2MP front 1.2MP front
Battery Life: 10 hours (rated) 10.1 hours (tested)
NFC: No Yes

As you can see from the comparison above the Nexus 7 still seems to hold up against the iPad Mini and even beat it in some areas. While the iPad Mini has an A5 that is comparable to the quad-core Tegra 3, it falls short of the display and smaller form of the Nexus 7. Ultimately it will come down to the question of wanting the iPad Mini because you are an Appl fan or the Nexus 7 because you are not.

Google Nexus 10 and LG Nexus 4 October 29th

nexus 10 nexus 4 and key lime pie

Google is said to announce the 32GB Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and LG Nexus 4 at their event in NYC on October 29th. With this announcement they should overshadow the Windows 8 event that is being held the same day. Not only will we be hearing about these great upgraded and new devices but also Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie is supposed to be unveiled as well.

32GB Nexus 7 – We have already heard quite a bit about the 32GB variant of the Nexus 7 and Google has mentioned replacing the 16GB Nexus 7 with a 32GB model. This 32GB model is coming just in time to rival the iPad mini which is said to be released with a $329 price tag. There has also been mention of an HSPA+ version of the Nexus 7.

Nexus 10 (Manta) – Samsung is working on creating a 10 inch variant of the Nexus 7 and have till now code named it Manta. The new “Nexus 10” will come with a 2560×1600(10:16) resolution at 300 PPI display. The new Nexus 10 will also be coming with Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie.

LG Nexus 4 – A new Nexus phone to be released by LG called the Nexus 4 and running Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie. This new Nexus Android smartphone will have specs like no other coming with not only the newest Android OS but also a Quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 processor, 4.7 inch 1280×768 display, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera and a 2100mAh battery.

With an event announcing this many new devices it will easily make the Windows 8 event almost non existent. There isn’t much information on the actual Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie announcements and features although this will also be a huge part of the event. Keep in mind that all of this is at this point educated speculation but should be rather close.

FBI Issues an Android Malware Warning

It seems the Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a warning to Android users to be careful of Malware attacks. The FBI has stated that many Malware attacks that they are tracking are traced to Android phones specifically.

“The android operating system offers an easier opportunity because it allows you to side load apps, which is to say, download the application program from anywhere and install it on your phone”

FBI officials have also mentioned that there are two types of Malware that seem to be the major concerns, Loozfon and FinFisher. The Loozfon is a Malware that installs a piece of software on your device from a website. Once the Malware is there it can steal information like contacts and phone numbers and then upload them to the creators. The second one known as FinFisher which allows the creator to actually control your phone remotely.

The FBI has however given a little advice to those that use Android devices and the first is to install protection like Lookout Mobile Security and be sure its running on your device. Also a few things you can do is keep consistant backups in the event you do get infected and use passwords and screen locks wherever available.

Sprint Gains Controlling Interest in Clearwire

sprint acquires controlling interest in clearwireSprint now officially holds the controlling interest in Clearwire putting them at 50.8% up from 48.1%. With Softbank’s acquisition of Sprint on Monday they are finally out of there financial struggle putting them in the position to acquire the controlling interest in the still struggling Clearwire. Now that these companies have combined interests we should see Sprint grow more like the its larger competitors that it has the last few years.

Sprint Nextel was able to get its hands on the controlling interest by paying Clearwire’s founder, Craig McGraw, $100 million to raise Sprint’s stake in the company. The control was a strategic move for Sprint to gain access to more of Clearwire’s LTE Network. Sprint easily worked its way in due to the fact that they are Clearwire’s number one customer and Clearwire’s fail with WiMAX causing it huge struggles.

UPDATE: July 2013 the merger of Sprint and Clearwire has finally completed.  All of Clearwire’s stock which was a class A common stock will be valued at $5.00 per share and no longer be available on the exchange.

UPDATE: Bad news for Clearwire CEO Prusch as he was the first to go in an attempt to re-align the companies future.  He will however remain in a strictly consultant role for a few weeks to be sure its a smooth transition.  Prusch took on a role at Clearwire in 2009 and became chief executive in 2011 after being chief executive of Borland and vice president of Intuit’s Turbo Tax group.  With these changes within the company there will likely be a large reduction in Seattle’s workforce while growing their presence in California instead.  All of this comes after Softbank’s acquisition of the company and will likely be the beginning of many changes throughout the executive structure.

Flash for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Devices

Those of us that have been using Android 4.1 Jelly Bean have noticed that there is no flash support and according to Adobe never will be. Since Adobe has stated that they will no longer support flash after Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich its up to the community to start trying to support it themselves. XDA user truth77 has posted an update to Adobe Flash to version 11.1.115.20 for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean users.

The update to Flash is available on Google Play although when trying to download it on an Android 4.1 device will tell you that its not compatible. All you need to do is download the APK and side load it on your device instead of going through the Play store.

Download the Flash for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean APK

After you have installed the apk you will notice that when using the Chrome browser you are still out of luck. To our knowledge there is still no way of getting Flash on the Google Chrome app. So it should make sense that this Adobe Flash version will only work on the stock Android browser and not Chrome. We have tried the apk on a few different devices and it has worked on them all so let us know below if it does or doesn’t work for you and the device you are using.  Also anything that you notice that can be done to improve the process or you think others should know please feel free to post via comments below.

UPDATE: As we stated earlier this APK is for the stock Android browser and will not work with the Chrome app.  This being said we have been told that this works with the Firefox app as well although we haven’t personally tested this.

Best Mobile Ad Networks for Android Developers

Make money with Mobile ad networksOne of the greatest concerns for new Android developers is how exactly they are going to monetize their app as well as what mobile ad networks are the best to use. Many developers choose to put a price tag on their apps although this is not always the way to make the most income from an app. Mobile ad networks tend to pay rather well for advertising space that moves with the users.

Most free Android apps on Google Play have some sort of advertising within them in one or several forms. In almost every case the ads you see within your apps show a very targeted ad causing a much higher click through rate than traditional advertising. Although with all of the mobile ad networks out there these days which ones are the best?

1. AdMob – Owned by Google (Google Adsense for Mobile Apps)

  • AdMob was not initially owned by Google and was released in 2006 becoming very popular with mobile developers until Google bought it up in 2009. While this is still the best network to use you will need to keep several things in mind. AdMob is owned by Google meaning that the chance of being banned without obvious reasons is greater than with other networks. Also Interstitial ads aren’t available as paid ads unless you are invited to use them. This being said you will never see an ad that is not targeted and the reporting and documentation is very easy to follow.

2. Airpush – Push notification Ads

  • Airpush from our experience is the higher paying of mobile ad networks although their ads are a bit intrusive to some people. Airpush uses several different types of ads such as push notification ads that show in your notification bar, signup ads on app load, and icon ads that place an icon on your device to be opened later. While these sorts of ads aren’t as disruptive as say a banner they are borderline malware in some users opinions. Airpush does however pay a minimum CPM of around $10 so its worth it for most developers. Airpush also pays its publishers weekly instead of monthly which is a huge bonus.

3. LeadBolt – Placement based ad network

  • LeadBolt is a great mobile ad network for those that are looking to just get into app development since they show in detail how the ads work and how you get paid for each. LeadBolt has several ways you can display ads like entry point that shows when the app first opens, engagement ads like banners and interstitial ads, and exit point ads that show when you are not using the app like push notifications.

4. Mobclix – Ad Network of Ad Networks

  • Mobclix allows you to connect various other ad networks in one location allowing you to use them all in the same app. On top of this you will see the other ad network stats from the one location without having to go to each to get the reports and earnings. You also get one check as opposed to each network writing checks or making payments to you separately.

5. MobFox – Highest paying mobile ad network (their words)

  • MobFox compares themselves to other ad networks like Admob and Mobclix and claims to pay 300% better than either. They have real time stat reporting and an easy implementation process. MobFox also offers an open API unlike many other mobile ad networks.

6. Tapjoy – Market and Monetize your Mobile Apps

  • Tapjoy is not only a revenue generating network but is also an app marketplace so you earn and market your app at the same time. With over 500 million devices having Tapjoy on them getting your app noticed is much easier than other methods. The adds they offer developers are the standard banners and paid per download models.

The Ad network that you choose is sometimes just preference but also based on the type of app you offer as well. Many people refuse to use apps that have many ads on them or ads that work outside of the app itself. Be sure to test a few different ones before you settle on one as you will notice what works for one app may not work so well for another.
