Google’s Android Version of Siri in Project Majel

Android Version of Siri by Google

The fact that Google has had voice command applications before Siri was ever added to iOS has not changed the fact that people are intrigued by Apple’s Siri. With this in mind Google has started a project called “Project Majel” to leave Siri in the dust. Google’s Project Majel is named after Majel Roddenberry who was the voice of the Enterprise computer in Star Trek. Google expects their new virtual assistant to act like the Starship computer in a way that it will answer any question you have.

Quote to a former Google X Project member:
This is in total violation of the NDA, but I don’t care anymore. Sue me.

The central focus of Google X for the past few years has been a highly advanced artificial intelligence robot that leverages the underlying technology of many popular Google programs. As of October (the last time I was around the project), the artificial intelligence had passed the Turing Test 93% of the time via an hour long IM style conversation. IM was chosen to isolate the AI from the speech synthesizer and physical packaging of the robot.

The robot itself isn’t particularly advanced because the focus was not on mechanics, but rather the software. It is basically a robotish looking thing on wheels. Speech recognition is somewhat better than what you would get with normal speech input, mostly because of the use of high quality microphones and lip-reading assistance.

I have had the chance to interact with the robot personally and it is honestly the most amazing thing that I have ever seen. I like to think of it like Stephen Hawking because it is extremely smart and you can interact with it naturally, but it is incapable of physically doing much. There is a planned phase two for development of an advanced robotics platform.

Project Majel is said to start really showing itself off in 2012 and we can only hope to see it sooner than later in an Android OS update at a minimum. Do we think since Google will be putting so much effort into this project that it will bury Siri? We can only hope 🙂

Root the Motorola Atrix 4.5.91 on Gingerbread 2.3.4 (Updated)

Petes Motorola Root Tools

We have had the manual instructions on rooting the Motorola Atrix 4G build 4.5.91 running Gingerbread 2.3.4 for a while now. This being said there is a one click method that is available and been tested to root the device much easier. The method was created for other devices but we have personally used it on the Atrix 4G and its flawless.

Root Instructions for the Motorola Atrix 4G on Gingerbread:

  1. Put your Atrix in USB Debugging Mode (Settings -> Application -> Development)
  2. Connect your Atrix to your PC via USB
  3. Download and unzip Pete’s Motorola Root Tools (Download Link)
  4. Run the Executable and click “Root My Phone”
  5. Be patient as it takes a few minutes
  6. Congrats your Atrix 4G is Rooted

Ignore the fact that the Motorola Atrix 4G is not listed as a device within the program that it roots. We have rooted multiple Atric 4G’s using this tool and never had an issue. Also many of the Atric 4G’s that we have rooted with this method are running with unlocked bootloaders and CM7.

Does Verizon use Carrier IQ on their Phones?

A huge question since the conversations about carriers using Carrier IQ on Android devices is, “which carriers are using carrier iq?”. Well it seems they may all use it even though some claim they don’t. Verizon has tried to argue the fact that they do not use Carrier IQ although we have had countless Verizon customers contact us saying their devices have the spyware installed. A few Motorola devices on Verizons network have been seen running Carrier IQ masked as “Fake Blur Xmpp”.

@joshuatopolshy posted on twitter last week … “To be 100% clear: Carrier IQ is *not* on #Verizon Wireless #VZW phones. There was however a question posed by Russel Holly asking Verizon to explain the following 3 running services:

  • 204.235.122.217 vzw-collector.demo.carrieriq.com
  • 204.235.122.218 vzw-dis.demo.carrieriq.com
  • 204.235.122.251 hupload-vzw99.carrieriq.com

There was no response from Verizon after this question was asked that leaves us to believe they weren’t sure what lie would get them out of answering clearly. Android Advice has not found any reason to believe that Verizon isn’t using the software based on user claims and events like the one above although we personally have no solid evidence on our end so take it as you will.

Asus Transformer Prime

The Asus Transformer Prime has already been rooted with a one click method. The method takes advantage of the new App Backup feature on the Transformer Prime easily rooting the device. The method found comes courtesy of AndroidRoot.mobi in the form of an app called Razorclaw v1.0.1. Cluzee is another Siri Competitor for Android

When Apple announced their iPhone 4s there was really nothing special about it besides its personal assistant “Siri”. This created quite a buzz in the mobile world and proved to be a great selling feature on the new iPhone placing the speed increase on the device as the number two reason to get the upgraded device. Android developers quickly started developing or promoting their own versions such as Iris and Speektoit. Now there is a new personal assistant for Android called Cluzee that seems to be the best alternative to Siri for Android yet.

Cluzee was released on the Android Market in November and claims to be “Your Intelligent Personal Assistant”. It utilizes “cutting edge technologies like voice recognition, voice synthesis, personal analytics, smart filters and machine learning to help users manage all aspects of their personal and digital lives”

We have taken the time to use Cluzee and notice that it goes a little further than Siri in details of answers. We asked Cluzee, “Whats my schedule like today?” and Cluzee started from the beginning of my calendar and also looked online for traffic delays and other factors that could effect my appointments.

The developers of Cluzee are Tronton and the CEO Ashish Patwa states:

“We don’t need all of the information available, all of the time. We just need the right information at the right time, which Cluzee intelligently provides, making us more productive. Technology created the problem, but we’re using smarter technology to solve it.”

As long as Tronton continues to improve Cluzee we could see the best personal assistant available and real competition for Siri. Give it a try by search the Android Market for “Cluzee” and let us know what you think.

Remove Carrier IQ (CIQ) Keylogger On Android

Carrier IQ Removal InstructionsCarrier IQ comes on many Android devices and logs every move you make on the device. You can find more information on this along with video proof on the article located at (Are Carriers Illegally Tapping your Android Phone?). This keylogging rootkit has been confirmed so far on HTC and Motorola phones with Sprint and AT&T.

How to Remove Carrier IQ from your Android Phone:
Currently only Android users are able to detect and remove the Carrier IQ thanks to the openness of Android. You will need to be rooted before trying the methods below:

  1. Install a Custom ROM on your device that will replace the custom ROM therefore removing the files that run for Carrier IQ to function.
  2. Download TrevE’s Logging Test App (Download Link) and Purchase the $.99 Key on the Android Market (Market Link). Open the App up and hit “Menu -> Remove IQ”. This will completely remove it from your device.

Are Carriers Illegally Tapping your Android Phone?

Carrier IQ Rootkit is logging everything you do on your Android phone from hitting the home button to sending a text to the contents of the text. This Carrier IQ which is being masked as a performance monitoring software for smartphones could be illegally tapping your every move.

According to a security researcher named Trevor Eckhart he found software that is logging your every move and calls this a rootkit, which is a software that hides and watches your every move with root access to everything. Seen above Eckhert released a video showing in detail what is going on. While this was shown on an HTC device we found the same program within the Motorola Atrix disguised under the name “Fake Blur Xmpp”.

Here is the real proof of sneakiness, not only ask yourself why hide the app doing all of this shady stuff? but also why is it not showing under running apps?

From Eckhart’s video you can see that Carrier IQ is only seen under all apps and not under running apps which he shows as IQRD on HTC devices and we have confirmed as Fake Blur Xmpp on Motorola devices. When trying to force close the app on the HTC device it does nothing and continues to run, we have also confined this to be true on Motorola devies.

Eckhart shows in the video that everything from the keypad buttons being pressed and home button pressed to secure website urls being passed as plain text and the content of your text messages being logged. The only way found so far to remove the application is to root your device and use a custom ROM that replaces the stock one.
