Google Cracking down on Google Plus Business Use

Google plus LogoA few days ago (yeah I know we are a bit behind on posting this) several Google+ accounts were shutdown since they weren’t being used as personal accounts. Most of these shutdowns started around 3:00pm EST on July 22nd. Google is not only after business pages but those users with fake names on their accounts as well.

Google has promised business pages in a matter of time although no date is given and only a few business pages have been allowed so far. These testing business pages are held by Ford Tech, MTV and Mashable that we know of.

There have been many accounts suspended since and many more to come. To remove risk of losing your account, use your real name for the name and use the business or nickname in the nickname field provided.

UPDATE: Google Plus business pages have now been available and are created and attached to personal accounts much like Facebook does with their pages.  These pages can be used for blogs, businesses and other organizational use and have many added features over personal pages.  There is also the ability to create a vanity url although its a crap shoot whether you will get approved.

You can get a vanity url but you need to have a certain number of people that follow you (have you in their circles) and the number of +1’s you have aquired.  The number of followers and/or +1’s you need is not yet published anywhere that we can find.  You will need to request the vanity url and Google will determine if you deserve one and either grant or deny your request.

If you have a business page and have managed to get a vanity url approved please let us know how many followers you have so that we can get a general idea of how many followers or +1’s you need to do so.

Clear Cache, History, and Cookies on your Android Device

Android Web BrowserAny device with a web browser has a cache, history and cookies of some kind, the Android is no different. I have had a lot of requests from readers asking how to clear these items.

What is being Stored on your Android? Your Android device is holding a list of all websites that you have visited along with tracking cookies that can gather information you may not want to give. While most tracking cookies are harmless some users just don’t want them sitting on their device. While there isn’t a lot of spyware or virus infections on Android devices there is the risk that this stored information can be pulled from your device.

How to clear your cache, cookies and history:

  1. Open the Android browser
  2. Go to Settings -> Privacy Configuration
  3. Tap ‘Clear Cookie data’, Tap OK
  4. Tap ‘Clear Cache’, Tap OK
  5. Tap ‘Clear History’, Tap OK
  6. Everything is Cleared, Your Done!

You can also clear all saved form data if you like from the same area by selecting ‘Clear form data’.

If you don’t want anything to ever cache on your device you can disable the web cache. This will stop all pages from caching anything beyond the page that your one at any given time.

How to disable web cache on Android devices:

  1. Open the Android browser
  2. Go to Settings -> Advanced Configuration
  3. Select ‘Set Cache Size’
  4. move the slider all the way to the left (100kb)
  5. tap ‘OK’ and congrats its off!

Multiple APK Uploads on the Google Market Now Allowed

Finally the Google Android Market will allow developers to upload different versions of the same app without creating separate listings. This means that when a developer uploads their app for the phone they can also upload the Tablet version. This should create easier and cleaner updating of apps on the market.  On top or this, app developers will no longer need to add change logs and update descriptions in so many different locations.

Multiple APK support gives you a variety of ways to control app distribution. For example, you could use it to create separate APKs for phones and tablets under the same product listing. You could also use it to take advantage of new APIs or new hardware capabilities without impacting your existing customer base.

The Market will now decide which app version you need based on screen size whether its the GL texture-compression formats or standard Android version. Now users will only see the app with comments and listing details without having to find the correct version for the device they are using.  This has been something that app developers and your average user alike will be able to appreciate.  No more downloading the wrong version of an app for your device.

Now that the Google Android Market allows multiple uploads with one listing we will likely see the Market grow even faster than it already is. Along with growth we may see many more apps available for Tablets in the near future since they will not have to be completely separate from the phone version in the listing.

Let us know as a developer if this new feature of the market has helped you in your current processes as well as how much easier things have been made for you.  As a user we would also be interested to know if this has improved your experience on the Android Market as far as finding the correct version of the app your looking for.

Get the official Netflix app on your Motorola Xoom

Earlier today Netflix updated their app to add a few more phones.  With this update the Motorola Xoom was not added to the list although it works flawlessly.  Below are both a Video on how to install the app, a video on the app working and the apk to install this new release of Netflix on your Motorola Xoom.

Download the Netflix APK at the End of this Article

UPDATE: It seems that Netflix is getting better about their app accross all devices and it should now work fine directly from Google Play although if you have any issues installing it you can still use the APK at the bottom of this article to install it as well. We have ven noticed that in most cases the Netflix app on Google Play works on devices as soon as they are released without having to wait for Netflix to update to include the devices. Most of this comes from app developers starting to develop for the OS version and less emphasis on the device itself as was the issue early on during initial development of Android apps.

If you have needed to use this APK to get Netflix working on your Motorola Xoom or any other device that doesn’t seem to get it natively from Google Play please let us know what device it is and anything else that may seem relavent. Also please let us know if you have any questions or issues with the APK we have provided.

UPDATE: The Motorola Xoom has been around now for a few years and is likely not an issue anymore. This being said with the amount of Android Tablets that are out there we are leaving this article in tact to be sure those of you that may not be having this issue on your Xoom but another tablet still have a way to get the Netflix APK.

Google Backs HTC in Fight against Apple

Apple vs HTC

As we’ve mentioned earlier the International Trade Commission found HTC liable on two counts of patent infringement in its Android devices in favor of Apple. Even though the suit is against HTC by Apple, it could easily affect any Android Manufacturer nice the alleged infringements are core parts of Googles Android OS.

Google’s executive Chairman Eric Schmidt at Google’s Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo criticizes Apple’s lawsuits. He states that Apple is jealous of Android’s growth and they are just trying to slow it down.

Schmidt’s Statements:

“The big news in the past year has been the explosion of Google Android handsets and this means our competitors are responding,” he said.
“Because they are not responding with innovation, they’re responding with lawsuits… We have not done anything wrong and these lawsuits are just inspired by our success.”

“We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations,” he said. “I’m not too worried about this.”

When asked about potentially providing financial support should HTC lose, Schmidt said: “We will make sure they don’t lose, then.”
Schmidt made it clear that Google would be backing up HTC in their fight against Apple. While he didn’t specify how they would show them support, he did state that he was confident that HTC would prevail.

U.S. Army Testing Android, iOS and Windows Phones almost done

The U.S. Army has been testing Android, iOS & Windows Phone 7 for around six weeks now to see which one will suit them best. To keep development costs down they will be choosing two of the three phone operating systems. These two chosen device operating systems will be approved U.S. Army devices to be sure they only have to develop for two types of devices. We haven’t heard any word on how they feel about the Windows 7 phones although from the start they seem to be focused more on Android and iOS. Our assumption at this point would be that these two will be the final choices.

We don’t know for sure but Android devices being used throughout our governments military will be an incredible boost for Android manufacturers and carriers alike.  It only makes sense that the two major devices that will be chosen are iOS and Android although they will likely have concerns about both devices.

Android Security Concerns for the U.S. Army
The main concern over using Android as an approved device within our military is the fact that it is open source and there are already virus and malware hitting the personal use handsets.  This may of course be the largest concern for anyone but security is one of the most important aspects of military so we will see how Android pans out if its chosen.

iOS lack of customization for U.S. Army
While iOS seems to be the most secure choice for a mobile OS for our military it has one major flaw and that is its ability to adapt to what would be required by them.  iOS will likely be a choice out of the three although they will have to manage to get around the lack of custom setups.  On a side note we have heard quite a few instances of Apples iOS tracking and this could also pose a threat to it as a decision.

With all of this being said we are going to at this point assume that Windows phones will be tossed aside because lets be honest there aren’t many people interested in Windows phones and therefore the support and thorough testing that is required can’t be done with such a small user base.

HTC Appealing ITC Ruling (Apple vs HTC)

Apple vs HTC
Apple vs HTC

HTC has been a major focus of Apples patent infringement cases from the beginning. Apple has been suing every Android OEM in the courts and HTC seems to be in the crosshairs again. On Friday an International Trade Commission judge agreed that HTC did violate two of Apples patents.

The two patents that HTC is accused of violating are not HTC specific features but general Android features. This could mean that this one win could ensure that Apple can start a long list of patent infringement suits against other Android device manufacturers.

HTC made the following comment before they had a chance to review the ruling:

“We are highly confident we have a strong case for the International Trade Commission appeals process and are fully prepared to defend ourselves using all means possible,”

Apple has tried to ban the imports of HTC and Samsung devices until the patent suits are finalized. This injection has yet to be enforced although with the history of suits being won by Apple since March of this year we can only hope that the bully known as Apple will have no such luck.

Samsung 4G LTE Slider (Verizon)

I know some of you Android fans out there wish that Verizon had more phones with slide out keyboards. Samsung has finally brought another one to the table for you to choose from. We don’t have a name for the phone yet although pictures have surfaced at Android Central.  This device is for all of you Blackberry users out there that are looking to update to Android for whatever reason.  We assume its to get more features and apps without being tied to the Blackberry limited market of apps.

From what we’ve found the phone will run Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread and will be a 4G phone. This phone will have a rear 5MP camera and front 1.3MP camera along with the Super AMOLED Plus display.  That makes for a rather nice device to rival Blackberry to date but will likely not have a huge following with all of the high end devices on the market today.

As we get more information on this new Samsung 4G slider we will let you know although we don’t think we will have one in inventory to test or review from a hands on perspective.  If you do decide to get the new Slider device on the Verizon network please let us know how you like it as well as any issues you run into when using it as i’m sure others interested in this device would like to learn more about it from actual users.

Unlock the Motorola Droid 3 Bootloader

Motorola Droid 3 (Verizon)
Motorola Droid 3 (Verizon)

Currently there is no way to unlock the Motorola Droid 3 bootloader although Motorola has promised a method by the end of this year. This being said we will be looking for this method soon since the Atrix will be getting its bootloader unlocked this month with its Gingerbread update.

If there is a bootloader unlock released by anyone in the Android community before the official one is released we will post it here. We are watching you XDA 🙂 … we can only assume XDA Developers will be the ones with it if ever available.

UPDATE: I have to apologize for this post as it seems that Motorola will never release a method to unlock the Droid 3 bootloader.  They did open up a site to unlock bootloaders on their devices although the Droid 3 has yet to make that list.  We have also been made aware that the Motorola Droid 3 is the most returned device ever in Verizon’s history .  What this means is that those that happen to keep the device will likely not get much support from the Android community since anyone that loves Android has likely already returned or replaced theirs by now.

XDA actually had a thread all about how to return your Droid 3 so that you could still get your upgrade from Verizon without having to buy a new phone outright.  We don’t have the link but are saying just the same, if you have a Droid 3 do a little research and get rid of it as Verizon will likely not support it and Motorola has shown they arent going to up until now as well.
