Corning Launches Willow Glass for Flexible Displays

Flexible Corning Willow Glass

We have seen flexible displays that Samsung has been working on for some time now but without the flexible glass to go with it, now Corning has created the flexible glass calling it “Willow Glass”. Corning is the company behind our loved Gorilla Glass which may be the only glass that everyone with a mobile device truly knows by name.

It will support thinner backplanes and color filters for both organic light emitting diodes (OLED) and liquid crystal displays (LCD) in high performance, portable devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebook computers. This new, ultra-slim flexible glass will also help develop conformable (curved) displays for immersive viewing or mounting on non-flat surfaces.

This new glass is a slim strong material that will allow for flexible screens on devices which only Corning would be expected to release. This will also allow roll-to-roll processing making the entire process less expensive. In turn we hope that the savings are reflected in mobile devices costs.

“Displays become more pervasive each day and manufacturers strive to make both portable devices and larger displays thinner. Corning Willow Glass provides the substrate performance to maintain device quality in a thin and light form factor,” said Dr. Dipak Chowdhury, division vice president and Willow Glass program director. “Currently manufacturing in a sheet-to-sheet process, we expect Corning Willow Glass to eventually allow customers to switch to high throughput, efficient roll-to-roll processing, a long-awaited industry milestone.”

While Corning hasn’t gone into much detail about how flexible the glass really is we would be interested to see a demonstration. Based on the image above we can see that it is quite flexible with a 180 degree bend. As we get more information we will be sure to share.

Facebook Launches App Center for Android and iOS

Facebook App Center for Android and iOS

Tonight we have heard that Facebook will be launching what they will call the “App Center”. This Facebook App Center will be a feature that will assist users in finding new mobile apps for their respective device that can be used with friends. From what we understand the App Center will only contain what they call “high quality” apps.

Facebook will be measuring the quality of the app based on user reviews and input by users of the app itself. The app recomendations will also be personalized from user to user to be sure that everyone gets the most out of the recomendations. On top of this you wqill be able to see the apps that your friends are using to give you the opportunity to get in on the same ones.

The Facebook App Center will be added to the Facebook mobile app for both Android and iOS, and of course will be able to be found on Facebook.com as well. Once you find the app based on the recomendation and reviews you can download the app. The download will actually take you to the Apple App Store or Android Market based on the device. If you are looking through the apps on Facebook.com you can send the link to your phone for later downloading as well.

We are likely to see more attempts at new services based on Facebook’s recent IPO fail but this one seems to have been in the monds for a while. The Facebook App Center has already started rolling out to users and will start out showing around 600 apps. The new App Center feature is supposed to get to all Facebook users within the next few weeks. If you play with it let us know what you think in the comments below.

Chrome OS to Merge with Android?

Google Chrome Android Merge

Google has made known that the next phase of the Chrome OS is to gradually merge it with the Android OS instead of Chrome OS based tablets. Both Google’s Chrome OS and Android are Google products and as such why shouldn’t they combine them into one super mobile/desktop OS.

While the Chrome OS will still be around as a desktop system it will be seamlessly integrated with Android. The result will be the same idea behind Apple’s Mac OSX and their mobile OS and its integration between the two. The idea behind the new system is to allow them to coexist with different sets of expectations but tie together in a way that they are closely related.

The new steps for Chrome should allow Android apps to run within the OS along with the web apps already supported. Not only would this open the doors for Google Apps to run on the desktop Google OS but also sync with your mobile devices without syncing being app specific. We will ultimately have to wait and see where the Chrome OS is taken over the next several months and hope for the same ease of use as always.

How to Backup and Restore Paradise Island on Android

Paradise Island is a very addictive Android game that has many things to do but one huge con is the fact that you can not transfer it between devices. While the app itself does not have a feature to backup or save your game to be played on more than one device ever there is a way to transfer your game to a different Android device without losing game data.

NOTE: Your Android phone will need to be rooted in order to backup Paradise Island and its game data. Also if you need a friend my code is: 863c83

How to Backup and Restore Paradise Island:

  1. Paradise Island Backup and RestoreDownload and install Titanium Backup
  2. Open Titanium Backup and allow Super User rights
  3. Select Batch Backup
  4. Select “Backup user apps”
  5. Make sure you have Paradise Island selected
  6. Now you have a backup
  7. When your ready to restore
  8. Make sure you have Titanium Backup Installed if new or wiped device
  9. Select Batch Restore
  10. Select Restore Missing Apps + data
  11. Congrats your game data is back!

This process may change slightly based on updates to Titanium Backup although should be easy to follow either way. If anyone has questions feel free to ask via comments below. Of course we aren’t responsible for lost game data but nobody has reported any issues with this technique for backup and restore.

Easily Create Android Games for Phones and Tablets

GameMaker Studio for Mobile Game Development

There are many development tools available to make creating an Android game a little easier for developers. What if you didn’t need to be a developer to create a great Android Game? There is a program available that we have personally used in the past before the Android Platform was added that really is easy to use called GameMaker by Yoyo Games.

While it makes the difficult task of creating an Android game easier it also allows for app development for Windows, Mac, HTML5 (Facebook), and iOS. We will however be focusing on the Android module specifically here with GameMaker Studio.

Create Games with GameMaker’s Android Module:
You can create Android games around 80% faster using the GameMaker platform than with the SDK and a software like eclipse. The process is streamlined in that it ensures compatibility with the many different hardware and screen resolutions that Android devices have. Since the Android platform has sold over 300 million devices running the popular OS this alone can be one of the most difficult parts of Android development.

GameMaker will allow you to use their integrated development environment to deal with “objects” instead of having to develop every aspect yourself. These objects are things like the fonts, sounds, images, music, and other resources that actually make up the physical game itself. Not only is this made easier but its accompanied by a drag and drop interface for easy development.

If your not into creating a game strictly with what is offered within the GameMaker Studio you can also dive into the code behind it with their source control scheme along with making it easy to allow teams of developer to work on the same project.

GameMaker Studio Android Module Features:

  • Backgrounds, sprites & images
  • Animated graphics
  • Rotate sprites
  • Modify resources at run-time – sprites, backgrounds, paths etc.
  • Particle effects
  • 3D graphics
  • 3D hardware acceleration
  • Native physics support
  • Off-screen surfaces – for rendering dynamic textures
  • Font control
  • Advanced text drawing – rotation etc.
  • Sound effects & music
  • Built-in data structures – stacks, lists, dictionaries, queues etc.
  • Paths and timelines
  • AI pathfinding

If you play around with the GameMaker Studio software please let us know what you think and let us know what you’ve created. Currently the GameMaker Studio is priced at $99 which is quite a deal if your looking at getting into Android Game development.

Another Facebook Phone in the Works?

Facebook Android Phone to be released 2013With Facebook and their highly volatile IPO there is pressure for them to start showing a profit for investors. Facebook having 5 mobile apps with no way to monitize being seen on the horizon and on top of serious bugs within their apps we aren’t sure why they are turning their focus to and actual Android device AGAIN! This is in fact the third time Facebook has tried to develop their own phone to try and rival Apple and Google and promise this device some time next year. The only way this will make sense it if Facebook can actually show a profit this time for the sake of investors.

According to the New York Times Facebook has hired a few former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the ipad and iphone to help this time. Since Facebook has all but reached its peak of user base at 700 million users worldwide they truly need something else to continue to show profits. Facebook does well on its browser platform although without any income from mobile users and more and more moving to mobile they are having a difficult time keeping up.

We have no information on the actual OS that Facebook would use although we lean towards Android for the simple fact that they can make it their own without developing an entirely new system or paying royalties. Based on speculation they will be taking a page from Amazon and their Kindle Fire.

What are the Benefits to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich?

There are many reasons why you would want your Android device running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but we have narrowed it down to the top 5. While many devices are getting the Android 4.0 update pushed to the device this year, if your not getting it you may want to upgrade. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has been out for some time now and a selling feature for most new devices is the fact that they are running the newest Android OS. Below are the main 5 reasons that you will want and maybe even need Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Android device.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Task ManagerAndroid 4.0 Task Management:
The task management features alone in Android 4.0 ICS is a great reason to want the update as this is a weakness in most Android devices and the number one drain on battery life. Beside the home button in ICS there is a button that looks like two windows overlapping. When you click the button you will get a list of windows that will show you whats running. You can either swipe your finger across the ones you want to close to remove it from memory or tap something that you want to re-open. This is incredibly helpful when you are having an issue with an app being able to close it quickly and re-open it without having to go through settings to find it.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Camera AppAndroid 4.0’s Camera App:
The stock camera app has been greatly improved from Android 2.3 to Ice Cream Sadnwich even though hardware may not change on the device. Your camera with Android 4.0 is almost instant without the horrible lag that you may get with your previous OS. You can keep tapping and taking pictures without waiting and having to actually get the perfect picture. Your Android 4.0 camera is as professional as you can get with a phone.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Notification BarAndroid 4.0 Notifications:
While the notification system hasn’t changed much on the new Android OS it has been improved. Instead of having to go though notifications or clear them all you can swipe the ones away that you no longer need or want to show. You remove the risk of missing the X on devices that actually have it by swiping instead of tapping. This may not seem like a great improvement but once you use the new way of swiping you will love it and wonder how you got by without it in earlier versions of Android.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Unified ApplicationsAndroid 4.0 Brings Unified Applications:
With previous versions of Android if you have a phone and a tablet you would need different versions of the same application for each device. Now you can have the same version running on both devices while still having them work well on both devices and in pretty much the same way. While the number of Android 4.0 applications are still low developers have moved their focus to the new OS and we are bound to see them increase in numbers very quickly.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Chrome BrowserAndroid 4.0 has Chrome Browser Support:
We have all wondered why Android being a Google powerhouse has never had the Chrome browser but now with Android 4.0 you can have it. The Chrome browser doesn’t come pre-installed although you can at least now install it if you want it and in fact we recommend it. While the stock Android browser seems to work very well Chrome is by far the best available right now with flawless multi-tabbed browsing. As with many other Android 4.0 features you can easily see all of the open tabs and swipe away all of the tabs that you no longer want open. We recommend downloading Chrome as soon as you get Android 4.0.

Again there are many improvements to the Android OS with Ice Cream Sandwich although those listed above are the most useful improvements in our opinion. There are also those features that we didn’t mention here that many of you may love like the Face unlock features and Android Beam although they are still being worked on as at release they seem a bit buggy. Let us know if we missed anything that you feel should be included in our list for the benefit of those reading this article.

Viewsonic 22-inch Android Tablet in the Works

Viewsonic Smart Business Monitor 22-inch Android Tablet

While with our smartphones we tend to think the smaller the device the better although with tablets we want them thin with huge screens. This being said can a tablets screen be too big? Viewsonic is working on an Android tablet with a 22 inch screen, yes you heard right 22 inches of Android on a tablet. Viewsonic plans on unveiling their 22-inch Android tablet at Taipei’s Computex. Viewsonic is calling its new Android table umm tablet a “smart business tablet monitor” which gives the impression this will not be a mobile device but a monitor with touchscreen capabilities much like the HP Touchsmart running Android instead of Windows.

While there are many tablet users out there that feel even 10 inches is too large and Toshiba’s 13 inch was just ridiculous many love the fact that a large screen is so easy to work on. But even those that love 13 inches of Android will have to think hard about a 22-inch version. A 22 inch tablet turns it into a stationary device and pretty much loses all mobile function unless your tablet case has arm holes for carrying.

While we have mixed feelings about the large device it could be very useful say on the kitchen wall for recipes and general information as needed and maybe even in a business to show specials and allow customers to interactively book appointments and view calendars and whatnot.

The Viewsonic smart business monitor will be announced next month and hopefully they can narrow down the exact thought behind the device then. We don’t have much more information on the device now but will fill everyone in when its announced officially. Do you think 22 inches is too much or do you have a use for it.

How to Reset Frozen HTC Inspire (Battery Pull)

Those of you with an Android phone know that frozen devices generally require a battery pull to reset them. In the case of phones like the HTC Inspire 4G the battery does not look like it can be removed although this is not the case its just not as obvious as taking the back off the device. You can either follow the video here or the instructions below.

How to Fix a Frozen Screen on HTC Inspire:

  1. pull the cover off of the side of the phone where the volume rocker is (the darker gray piece.
  2. hit the volume side of the phone against your hand and the battery will slide out enough for the phone to turn off.
  3. push the battery back into the phone and replace the plastic cover.
  4. Turn your phone on and it should boot up as normal.

Of course its always easier to just take a look at the video because its a little harder to explain then to show.

If your HTC Inspire is still freezing when you turn it on you may want to perform the battery pull to restart it followed by booting directly into recovery mode and performing a factory reset. I say this because its likely a software bug that can be easily repaired by getting everything back to its stock condition.
