Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple’s CEO

Steve Jobs steps down as Apple's CEO
Steve Jobs steps down as Apple's CEO

Steve Jobs just announced that he will no longer be the CEO of Apple and has suggested that Tim Cook be named the new CEO. While this does not directly relate to Android it certainly does beg the questions why exactly, and what does this mean for Apple?

Steve Jobs Letter States:

August 24, 2011–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Press Release from Apple, Inc.

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Apple’s Board of Directors today announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

Jobs submitted his resignation to the Board today and strongly recommended that the Board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO.

As COO, Cook was previously responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations, including end-to-end management of Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support in all markets and countries. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division and played a key role in the continued development of strategic reseller and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

Since Steve Jobs is requesting that he still be involved with Apple he will still have a hand in its innovations.  As we get more information on this we will be sure to let you know.

Can you Replace a Laptop with a Tablet?

Tablet to Replace a Laptop
Will Tablets Replace Laptops and Can I replace my Laptop Now

With all of the students going back to school the question is up in the air, can you use a tablet in place of a laptop and if so are the functions and software there to support using one.

Personally we say yes a tablet has the same features as most laptops with many advantages. Of course the first and most important aspect of a tablet is ease of transporting followed closely with the incredible battery life that tablets possess.

Some of the Advantages of a Tablet over a Laptop:

  • Weight and Size
  • Battery Life
  • Fast wake up
  • Speed because of lightweight OS
  • Ability to have 4G built in

“It depends on how much content creation they’re going to be doing versus consumption,” said Nick Stam, director of technical marketing at NVIDIA. “That holds true for not just the back to school kids but for everyone.”

Of course we are thinking high end tablets when we are talking about replacing your laptop. This would include tablets like the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, ASUS Transformer, etc.

While many users such as engineering majors and businesses that require more intense processor speeds this would not be a viable option. Those that are using it for school and basic business functions will easily be able to do everything if not more on a tablet. We have no doubt that in the near future tablets will fully replace laptops and desktops alike.

  • 2 new market icons
  • App size has been moved to the top of the explanation

We think that the PIN function is way overdue and are very excited about this feature. I personally have a 2 year old daughter who plays with many of Android Advices devices, phones and tablets. It will be nice to avoid having her purchasing apps on any of these devices.

Please let us know what you think of the new Google Android Market and if version 3.1.4 is an improvement in your opinion.

Sprints adds Non-Contract Data Plans to the Evo View 4G

Many of you have thought about getting Sprints Evo View 4G but aren’t excited about paying for a data plan. Now Sprint has announced that there will be “prepaid” and “pay as you go” options for the device. There are now three plans that include the day pass, week pass, and month pass.

Sprint is always trying to find ways to stay in the game and we have to admit that they are doing a good job.  With competition that is so much larger than them it has to be difficult to keep themselves considered to be on the same level.  AT&T and Verizon are exponentially larger companies with a user base so much larger.  Below are the plan offerings that Sprint has outlined for their pre-paid Evo View 4G.

Sprints Plans for the Evo View 4G:

  1. Day Pass – $14.99 (150MB) – (50MB more than Verizon or AT&T)
  2. Week Pass – $29.99 (500MB) – (200MB more than Verizon or AT&T)
  3. Month Pass – $49.99 (1.5GB) – (500MB more than Verizon or AT&T)

Since Sprint owns both Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile they have figured out the potential in prepaid plans. People these days like to control their budget and prepaid plans are the way to do it. Prepaid plans for Tablets will be the way most users will go in my opinion due to the fact that you only need it occasionally as you usually have access to Wi-Fi. When going on a road trip or vacation these plans will be very convenient.

Would you rather cancel your contract in order to go with a pre-paid option?  We would like to hear from others to see what they think.  We of course like our older contracts with unlimited data but now that most carriers are getting rid of their unlimited data plans for new contracts this may be the way to go.  We will probably use Sprints pre-paid plans for devices that we test due to the fact that we would like the full experience when testing without the associated contracts.

So Why Root the Droid X?
Everyone  has their own reason for rooting their Android device but among the top reasons are being able to tether without paying for a carriers plan (this also allows those with unlimited data services to keep it that way without upgrading).  Freedom to make changes within the system files of your device as well as backing up the device in its entirety.  Sometimes it comes down to something as simple as the ability to take screenshots with your device or get rid of (or change) the boot animations.  No matter what your reason the root methods are getting easier as time goes on and its easily the most influential improvement you can make to your device.

What are the Drawbacks from Rooting the Droid X?
Well to be honest at this point there is no real drawback as your device is likely out of contract although if you are for some reason still under contract this can void it in the event of damage to your device.  There is also the risk of damaging your device by deleting or altering files that you would otherwise have no access to without root.

Let us know if you root your Droid X and what the outcome was or is.  Although at the time of this article it was a great device and even Froyo at the time was worth having but Android has improved greatly since and you are likely ready for an upgrade or are using the device as an Android iPod Touch 🙂
